April, Gina's pick:
The Secret Between Us, by Barbara Delinsky
Deborah Monroe and her daughter, Grace, are driving home from a party when their car hits a man running in the dark.
Grace was at the wheel, but Deborah sends her home before the police arrive, determined to shoulder the blame for the accident. Her decision then turns into a deception that takes on a life of its own and threatens the special bond between mother and daughter. This is an unforgettable story about making bad choices for the right reasons and the terrible consequences of a lie gone wrong. Barbara Delinksy has delivered a riveting study of family and a superbly crafted novel, perfectly targeted to reading groups and fans of provocative fiction.
May, Laurel's pick:
Cutting for Stone, by Abraham Verghese
The story is a riveting saga of twin brothers, Marion and Shiva Stone, born of a tragic union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mother's death in childbirth and their father's disappearance, and bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. But it's love, not politics -- their passion for the same woman -- that will tear them apart and force Marion to flee his homeland and make his way to America, finding refuge in his work at an underfunded, overcrowded New York City hospital. When the past catches up to him, wreaking havoc and destruction, Marion has to entrust his life to the two men he has trusted least in the world: the surgeon father who abandoned him and the brother who betrayed him.
June, Sabina's pick:
The Midwife of Venice, by Roberta Rich
Hannah Levi is known throughout sixteenth-century Venice for her skill in midwifery. When a Christian count appears at Hannah's door in the Jewish ghetto imploring her to attend his labouring wife, who is nearing death, Hannah is forced to make a dangerous decision. Not only is it illegal for Jews to render medical treatment to Christians, it's also punishable by torture and death. Moreover, as her Rabbi angrily points out, if the mother or child should die, the entire ghetto population will be in peril.
Men's Group The Wellspring and Trinity men gather together in the lower hall at Trinity on the first Saturday of each month at 8:30 am with breakfast provided. The goal is fellowship, friendship, and service. Past activites are hikes up Mt. Wachusetts, fishing trips, a trip to Patriot place, and helping with the Christmas tree sales. All are welcome to join!
Though it begins as the quietly electrifying story of
an unmarried Amish teenager who gives birth to a
baby she is accused of then smothering, Picoult's
book settles into a trial epic, albeit one centered
intriguingly on an Amish dairy farm near Lancaster,
Pa. Katie Fisher, 18, denies not only having
committed the murder but even having borne the
baby, whose body is found in the Fishers' calving
pen, and she sticks to her story, even when she is
quizzed by Ellie Hathaway, the high-powered
Philadelphia attorney who undertakes Katie's defense
as a favor to Leda, an aunt she and the
young woman share.
ChoirJoin us for rehearsals and fellowship on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For more information contact Sandra Tilander at music@wellspringumc.net
Youth GroupOur Project Linus All Ages and Youth Group event is re-scheduled for Sunday, October 26th. Please join us after church for a light lunch and then help out with blanket tying. Two layers of fleece are tied together to make a very cozy blanket. All you have to be able to do is use scissors and tie a knot! All our blankets will be blessed by Pastor Leslie and donated to our local Project Linus chapter. They are given to children in hospitals, shelters and homes to help them through medical treatments.
